Maintenance,

Watering, mowing, feeding, and seasonal care that keeps California sod at its premium best.

Watering New Sod · Week One

Keep the sod and soil damp. Two to three light waterings per day depending on temperature and wind. Avoid pooling. Check beneath the sod to make sure moisture reaches the soil, and adjust to weather and your local water rules.

Watering New Sod · Week Two

Transition to one deep watering per day. The goal: moisture penetrates 4 inches without runoff. Adjust watering as roots establish and conditions change.

Watering an Established Lawn

Deep, infrequent irrigation encourages resilient roots. Two to three waterings per week may be enough for many California yards, but your soil, variety, weather, and water district determine the right schedule. Water before sunrise to reduce evaporation and avoid runoff.

Mow with intention

Never cut more than one-third of the blade. Keep mower blades sharp, a clean cut heals faster and looks better between mows.

Feed by season

A balanced fertilizer program in spring and fall drives density and color. Avoid high-nitrogen mid-summer applications on warm-season varieties.

Aerate annually

Core aerification once per year relieves compaction, improves water penetration, and unlocks root growth.
